Story highlights Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004 Like many users, Thomas Lake has complicated feelings about Facebook But he sees his Facebook feed as a living journal of his lifeCNN —Facebook turns 20 years old today, and if you don’t like it, I’m sure you have your reasons. My children began talking, which led to my new favorite genre of Facebook post: Cute Thing My Kid Said. I memorialized his arrival in a Facebook post but did not say he was fighting for his life in intensive care. As its best, Facebook is a digital museumAs I write this in early February, I have yet to post anything on Facebook in 2024. Facebook friendship is no substitute for real-life friendship, and someone else’s Facebook pictures are no substitute for your own experience.

CNN —Nashville police say an investigation began Monday morning into three photographs that surfaced online of alleged writings connected to the March shooting at a private Christian school that left three 9-year-olds and three adults dead. The pictures of writings allegedly from the 28-year-old shooter, who was a former student at The Covenant School, were released by a conservative political commentator Monday. One page of the writings appears to be a day’s checklist, while another is filled with angry ramblings. It’s unclear how many more pages of writings there may be, and what the contents of other pages are. The shooter’s writings have been part of a monthslong legal fight playing out in Nashville over the release of documents and records related to the March 27 shooting.

And opera needs works like “10 Days,” which treats the medium with affection and respect while also chafing at its tropes throughout history. For this is an opera that jerks between beauty and terror — seamlessly under the baton of Daniela Candillari, leading an ensemble of about a dozen instrumentalists. The patients (members of Opera Philadelphia Chorus, led by Elizabeth Braden) can sing the same hymn with serenity in one scene and chaotic dissonance in the next, with few indications of which is the truer rendition. The most tragic of the patients is Lizzie (the mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, who sings with a lush and moving elegance that would make her ideal for mid-20th century American opera). Her repetitive ramblings come into logical focus with a long, crushing aria about the death of her daughter.

Trump gave long-winded answers while being deposed in NY AG Letitia James' financial-fraud lawsuit. "We're going to be here until midnight," one of the AG's lawyers worried out loud. "Chris," Wallace responded, "we're going to be here until midnight if your client answers every question with an eight-minute speech." Trump told the lawyer he paid off all the loans that he took out from banks to pay for his properties. When I get sued by you — fortunately, I don't need banks," Trump continued.

Discovery chief executive could have waited to appoint a singular leader of CNN after firing his former hand-picked network boss Chris Licht. By appointing a new chief executive and chairman, he’s taking an inherent risk as the 2024 presidential cycle heats up. Under former network boss Jeff Zucker, staffers never questioned what CNN’s mission statement was. It will be illuminating to hear more from Thompson on this matter, given he will also be responsible for CNN’s editorial. During his decades in media, Thompson earned a reputation for being a confident executive with thick skin who masterfully executes a vision, all while maintaining the support of the troops.

A lawyer used ChatGPT to help search for legal cases to write an affidavit backing his lawsuit. The AI hallucinated six fake cases, per a federal judge, which the lawyer included in the filing. US District Court Judge P. Kevin Castel asked lawyer Steven Schwartz of personal injury law firm Levidow, Levidow & Oberman, according to Inner City Press. The court filing included six court cases that were "bogus judicial decisions with bogus quotes and bogus internal citations," Castel wrote in a previous court order. "I have worked with Mr. Schwartz for 27 years," LoDuca said in court, Inner City Press reported.

Bored Ape Yacht Club was not the biggest crypto phenomenon, but it was one of the top beneficiaries of celebrity hype. The Bored Apes — a computer-generated collection of 10,000 cartoons — were being presented as a status symbol, membership in an exclusive club. Yuga sued Ripps for trademark infringement, and argues that his maligning of the Yuga apes is nothing more than a profiteering tactic. Hickman, who is Black, thought the Bored Apes looked like stereotypical portrayals of Black people as stupid or lazy. He said he thought this would be obvious to most people the second they saw an image of a Bored Ape.
Former RNC Chair Michael Steele said the GOP threatens its own longevity by focusing on Trump. Steele said some GOP leaders want the party to move on from Trump and hope he'll be arrested by 2024. But he added that many GOP voters and state party organizations are still loyal to Trump. Steele served as RNC chair from 2009 to 2011 and endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020 but remains a Republican. Michael Schwartz/Getty ImagesThe former RNC chair said McDaniel effectively chose Trump, citing how she dropped her middle name "Romney" at Trump's request in 2017.
Herschel Walker delved into an ancient, mythic debate during a Wednesday stump speech in Georgia. The Senate candidate came out as pro-werewolf as he described the plot of a vampire movie. "I don't know if you know, but vampires are some cool people, are they not?" Perhaps it was the "Underworld" film series that Walker was referencing, which detail a mythical war between vampires and werewolves. But neither Walker nor Warnock won 50% of the required vote outright in the election last week, meaning Walker supporters and Georgia voters alike could be in for three more weeks of vampires vs. werewolves.
The bold way that the GOP — the pro-life party — continues to support Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker, who allegedly urged an ex-girlfriend to have an abortion and paid for the procedure, is eyebrow-raising to say the least. However, it’s not the first time Walker has been involved in a deal in which he has failed to live up to expectations. If you are an ardent Vikings fan, the Walker trade was a raw deal that still stings to this day. In this lopsided trade, it’s former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party attempting to present Walker as a Senate candidate with deeply held anti-abortion convictions to conservative Georgia voters. According to a Survey USA poll of likely voters, conducted Sept. 30 through Oct. 4, Warnock leads Walker 50% to 38%.
And rather than worship the divine, the crowd was there to herald the malign: Donald Trump and his brand of hateful, intentionally divisive politics. Similar to a creed, Trump shared his litany of election-denial lies that have come to constitute the Republican Party platform. The intentional coupling of MAGA politics with religious imagery isn’t merely a rhetorical act, either. Trump’s Ohio rally is hardly the only recent example of a politician appropriating religious symbols to seize power. Here, too, Christians are speaking out against his hijacking of the church for right-wing politics.
